Who We Are

The Institute for Composer Diversity works to encourage the discovery, study, and performance of music written by composers from historically excluded groups.

We do this to positively impact three important groups: the audiences and students who will engage with the music, the conductors, performers, and educators who serve to bring that music to those audiences and students, and the composers themselves.

WHAT WE DO
ICD works in three main areas: databases, analysis, and action. Our databases encourage the musical community to discover works by composers from historically excluded groups. Our analytical studies show where diverse programming is occurring and where it is needed. Finally, we provide straightforward and effective ideas for more diverse and inclusive repertoire decisions.

FREDONIA
The Institute for Composer Diversity operates within the School of Music at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Aligned with Fredonia’s goals for each of its students to be skilled, creative, connected, and responsible, the Institute has evolved from a simple resource project for the Fredonia composition studio to be more aware of women composers in 2016 to a robust research and advocacy organization within which Fredonia students take part as Research Fellows and through independent studies.

While the Institute is sponsored by the State University of New York at Fredonia, the Institute is not financially supported through state funds. The Institute is supported through individual contributions and institutional giving.
